10 Lesser Known Facts About Ramayana

Ramayana is an ancient epic poem that depicts the struggles of Lord Rama. It talks about the how he rescued his wife, Sita from the king, Ravana. Mahabharata and Ramayana, together, form the Sanskrit Itihasa. The whole epic was being known to be ascribed by Valmiki. The world-famous epic still has some lesser known facts which are as follows.

 

  1. Lord Rama is considered as an outstanding human being by Valmiki’s Ramayana. But according to Rama Charit Manas, Rama was a God.
  2. Ravana was a true devotee of Lord Shiva and in order to impress him, Ravana sacrificed his head.
  3. In order to guard Rama and Sita, Laxman did not sleep even for a minute in that 14 years of exile. Hence, he is known as Gudakesh which means a man who defeated sleep.
  4. Laxman’s wife, Urmila slept for 14 years to complete the sleep of her own and her husband’s.
  5. Hanuman is known as Bajrang Bali as he covered himself in vermilion (sindoor) just to keep Lord Rama safe.
  6. In her childhood, Sita had moved the box which contained the Shiv Dhanush (Lord Shiva’s bow). This was the reason behind King Janak’s condition for Sita’s wedding.
  7. It is said that a squirrel’s body has white stripes only because Lord Rama as he patted the back of a squirrel due to which the stripes occurred.
  8. Nandi, the bull is known to have cursed Ravana stating that the monkeys will be the reason for his destruction.
  9. Laxman is said to have killed three sons of Ravana— Meghnad, Aitkay and Prahast.
  10. It is said that the Lanka was constructed by Kuber, the god of wealth buy was later, overthrown by Ravana, his half-brother.
