Kathak

The word ‘Kathak’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Katha’ which means story. The whole dance form is a way of communicating a story like the Greek theatre. It is a form of oral tradition which has been passed on from one generation to another. The dancer performs to the rhythm of a tabla.

Odissi

Since history, Odissi has been performed by women who tell religious stories particularly Vaishnavism through their dance. The dancers and the musicians play a mythical story or devotional poem from the Hindi text. This dance form stands out due to its Tribhangi posture which deals with three parts of the body— head, bust and torso.

Manipuri

Also known as Jagoi, Manipuri dance is one of the major classical dances of India. It is mostly a team performance with a unique set of costumes, conventions and repertoire. It is considered to be a religious art and expression of spiritual value.

Sattriya

One major dance form of India is Sattriya which is a combination of dance-drama in the monasteries of Assam where Krishna is the main focus. A major part of the themes includes stories of Ram and Sita or Krishna and Radha.

Bharatnatyam

Mohiniyattam

The word ‘Mohiniyattam’ is derived from two different words ‘Mohini’ which means beautiful women and atta means dance. Hence, it is performed by women. The basic themes of this dance form are love and emotion.

1. Dorothy Gibson was a star of the silent-screen films at that time. After surviving the wrecking of the ship, Gibson did not only tell the tale but also starred in the movie. It was one of the most successful silent movies ever created.
2. The Captain of the ship was Edward John Smith who was a 37 years old veteran. He served the White Star Line for about 28 years but still wasn’t the best man to hand this job. Even though he had spent an entire life manning sail ships and old steamers, he wasn’t quite ready to handle a full-fledged ship. This was made clear when he asked the crew to remain at full speed in the area which is known for the unpredictability of icebergs.
3. It has been well recorded that out of all the passengers only 713 survived. however, what is still less known if the fact that out of the 713 passengers, three were dogs—a Pekinese and two Pomeranians?
4. It has been noted that the distressed calls by the Titanic were heard by none of the ships nearby. The SS Californian was about eight to fifteen miles away but the captain stated that they had already turned on the radio for the night.
5. Even though the ship was surrounded by water, there were really no proper showers. People had to share old bathtubs. The third class passengers had to share two baths, one for the men while one for the women among 700 people.
6. The most senior officer of the Titanic to survive was the 2nd Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller. He took control and ensured a safe passage to the 30 passengers in his boat. He is also known for helping the British Navy, in World War 1 and World War 2, to evacuate Dunkirk in the second war.
7. There were eight members of the all-male Titanic orchestra which went down playing the instruments. Three bodies were recovered including that of John Hume Law. Two weeks after the tragedy took place, Law’s father received a bill of the uniform his son wore.
8. There has been no footage of Titanic leaving the shores and hence, when the news came out, the media did not have any images of the ship and therefore, used the images of Olympic (sister ship of Titanic).
9. The Titanic was used as a publicity stunt by the Nazis which was commissioned by the Joseph Goebbels. It has been interpreted that a vessel tried to cross the Atlantic in record time. But it has been stated that in real life, Fredrick Fleet and Reginald Lee spotted the iceberg.
10. The second Officer David Blair had been replaced by Henry Wilde from the crew’s list only a few days before the departure. He forgot to give the keys to the locker where the binoculars were kept. If only Fleet had the binoculars, the icebergs could have been spotted way earlier and the shop would have been saved.

The sequal to the movie ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, it released on 22 December, 2017. It is an action thriller that follows an adventurous rescue mission in Iraq. The film features actors like Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif in the main lead. Under the view of Director Ali Abbas Zafar & produced by Yash Raj Films accompanied by line and associate producers, it was a treat for the audience in the festive season.The critics had mixed reviews about the film but it was a hit at the box office.With critic’s rating of 3.5/5 stars, the review by the audience was ‘just laugh & be merry’.

Golmaal Again

The movie gave a fun filled ride to the audience, and marked its beginning in theatres on 20 October, 2017. Featuring actors like Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu and others, the movie is surrounded around the genres like action, comedy and fantasy directed and produced by Rohit Shetty and ShreeAsthavinayak, respectively. The movie proved to be better than Golmaal Returns and Golmaal 3, and the series looks like it’s never going to end.

The Indian Action movie directed by David Dhawan released on 29 September 2017, and starred Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, TapseePannu in the lead roles. The film is produced by SajidNadiadwala.

The film was finally in theatres on 25 January, 2017. It was based on criminal Abdul Latif’s wife. The action crime film stars Shahrukh khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan in the lead cast. Rahil Dholakia dIrected the movie and the Red Chillies entertainment was the producer. The movie got ratings of 3.5/5 stars & was tagged as a wholesome entertainer of sorts with Nawaz as a complete show stealer.  According to critics, the movie appealed to the masses.

Toilet: EkPrem Katha

The movie released on 11th august 2017, starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher, Divyendu Sharma and others. The movie was directed by Shree Narayan Singh. It was a tremendous hit at the box office. The comedy- drama movie was a satirical take on the old age ‘tradition’ of seeking fields to relieve ourselves.

Kaabil

The movie released with Raees on 25 January 2017, starring Hrithik Roshan, and YamiGautam, and there was a big clash between the two movies at the box office. The director and producer of the movie were Sanjay Gupta and Rakesh Roshan respectively. The critics rated it 4/5 stars. The movie was inspired by Hollywood’s Blind Fury, the adaptation turned out to be effective & entertaining to the masses.

Tubelight

The war drama/history movie released on 23 June,2017 was the sixth-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017 by worldwide gross. The movie featured Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Zhu Zhu, Shahrukh khan and others, and was directed and produced by Kabir Khan. The movie also marked the last performance of Om Puri who died shortly after completing the film. It was an adaptation of the Hollywood movie Little Boy. Though the movie got mixed critical reception, but it did scorea good rating.

Jolly LLB 2

The movie got 4/5 stars by hitting the theatres on 10 February, 2017. The Indian black comedy film directed by Subhash Kapoo and Fox Star Company’s Production is a sequel to the 2013 film Jolly LLB, and the second instalment of the Jolly LLB film series. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, and Annu Kapoor in lead roles.The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Released on 10 March, 2017, the romantic comedy movie was directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles under Dharma Productions. The film was the eighth-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017 by worldwide gross. The movie turned out to be an above average Bollywood romance.

With a great cast like Tom Hardy, Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh, Dunkirk has become one of the best movies of 2017. Produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, and also written by Nolan, the filming of Dunkirk began in May 2016. The movie received appreciation for not only its screenplay and direction but also for musical score and cinematography. This movie about the historical evacuation received 8.1 stars out 10.

Thor: Ragnarok

Based on the Marvel Comics character— Thor; it is an American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and directed by Taika Waititi. The amazing movie starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba and Tessa Thompson was released on November 3,2017. The movie became the highest grossing movie from the Thor series and the eight highest grossing movie of 2017. The film was appreciated for great cinematography and music. Thor: Ragnarok was given a rating of 7.5 out of 10.

One is never too old to watch animated movies; Coco— a movie by Disney and Pixar is one of the top movies of 2017. Released on October 20, 2017, the cast of the movie consists of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt and Alanna Ubach. The movie received praise for its vocal performance, songs, animation and also for the respect shown towards the Mexican culture. The movie was rated 8.2/10 by the website Rotten Tomatoes.
