According to the Indian Constitution, children between the age group of 6 and 14 have the right to free and compulsory education. Indian education is provided through private as well as public sector with funds from central, state and local governments. There are four main boards in India, according to which the students are taught in schools.

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education is a non-governmental board of examination by Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination for class 10. The board is designed to provide general education to the students for examinations. This was done through the New Education Policy 1986 (India). Before 1986, ICSE was affiliated by the French Board of Examination. The syllabus of ICSE class 10 is double the syllabus of CBSE class 10. Hence, it is considered to be the toughest board in India. The English of the board is quite difficult than other boards and good students have an edge in competition.

Central Board of Secondary Education

Under the Union Government is the secondary board of education(CBSE), which is found in both- public and private schools. The schools affiliated with it follow the NCERT curriculum. CBSE conducts examination for both class 10 and class 12 as well. The board used to also conduct examinations for AIEEE Examination for admissions in undergraduate courses like engineering and architecture. It also conducts examination for AIPMT for admission in the medical colleges in India.

National Institute of Open Schooling

Even though established for distance education, NIOS has become a formal and regular secondary and senior secondary program similar to CBSE. It also comes under the Union Government and its main aim to provide education to children living in the remote areas. Through this board, children can study without attending regular schools. This is also considered to be public examinations due to its flexibility. It was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1989.

International Baccalaureate

International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit education system that is present in more than 3000 schools in 141 countries. IB has a different way of educating students and therefore, its content is extremely innovative. Its main aim is to help students develop in all aspects of life rather than just in academic sphere. At present, it can be seen in schools in the metro cities of India.

State Boards

It is difficult to state when exactly the concept of state board emerged. As the name suggests, each state conducts its examination for class 10 and 12 with accordance to their own state board. The benefit of a state board is that the students gain knowledge about their state and the topics are of local relevance.

Titanic is known all worldwide as a British ship that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship was under the command of Captain Edward Smith who unfortunately died as the ship sank. The tragedy was discovered about 70 years later in 1985. Some of the lesser-known facts about The Titanic are as follows.

Dorothy Gibson was a star of the silent-screen films at that time. After surviving the wrecking of the ship, Gibson did not only tell the tale but also starred in the movie. It was one of the most successful silent movies ever created.

The Captain of the ship was Edward John Smith who was a 37 years old veteran. He served the White Star Line for about 28 years but still wasn’t the best man to hand this job. Even though he had spent an entire life manning sail ships and old steamers, he wasn’t quite ready to handle a full-fledged ship. This was made clear when he asked the crew to remain at full speed in the area which is known for the unpredictability of icebergs.

It has been well recorded that out of all the passengers only 713 survived. however, what is still less known if the fact that out of the 713 passengers, three were dogs—a Pekinese and two Pomeranians?

It has been noted that the distressed calls by the Titanic were heard by none of the ships nearby. The SS Californian was about eight to fifteen miles away but the captain stated that they had already turned on the radio for the night.

Even though the ship was surrounded by water, there were really no proper showers. People had to share old bathtubs. The third class passengers had to share two baths, one for the men while one for the women among 700 people.

The most senior officer of the Titanic to survive was the 2nd Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller. He took control and ensured a safe passage to the 30 passengers in his boat. He is also known for helping the British Navy, in World War 1 and World War 2, to evacuate Dunkirk in the second war.

There were eight members of the all-male Titanic orchestra which went down playing the instruments. Three bodies were recovered including that of John Hume Law. Two weeks after the tragedy took place, Law’s father received a bill of the uniform his son wore.

There has been no footage of Titanic leaving the shores and hence, when the news came out, the media did not have any images of the ship and therefore, used the images of Olympic (sister ship of Titanic).

The Titanic was used as a publicity stunt by the Nazis which was commissioned by the Joseph Goebbels. It has been interpreted that a vessel tried to cross the Atlantic in record time. But it has been stated that in real life, Fredrick Fleet and Reginald Lee spotted the iceberg.

The second Officer David Blair had been replaced by Henry Wilde from the crew’s list only a few days before the departure. He forgot to give the keys to the locker where the binoculars were kept. If only Fleet had the binoculars, the icebergs could have been spotted way earlier and the shop would have been saved.

India is known to be a very diverse country with a number of cultures in it. These different cultures bring with them different set patterns about the festivals, eating habits, religion, language, customs and dances. It has been well researched that celebrating and worshipping the deity was a gesture used by humans. The different cultures are associated with different dance forms. Some of the dance forms of India are as follows.

Kathak

The word ‘Kathak’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Katha’ which means story. The whole dance form is a way of communicating a story like the Greek theatre. It is a form of oral tradition which has been passed on from one generation to another. The dancer performs to the rhythm of a tabla.

Odissi

Since history, Odissi has been performed by women who tell religious stories particularly Vaishnavism through their dance. The dancers and the musicians play a mythical story or devotional poem from the Hindi text. This dance form stands out due to its Tribhangi posture which deals with three parts of the body— head, bust and torso.

Manipuri

Also known as Jagoi, Manipuri dance is one of the major classical dances of India. It is mostly a team performance with a unique set of costumes, conventions and repertoire. It is considered to be a religious art and expression of spiritual value.

Sattriya

One major dance form of India is Sattriya which is a combination of dance-drama in the monasteries of Assam where Krishna is the main focus. A major part of the themes includes stories of Ram and Sita or Krishna and Radha.

Bharatnatyam

The most famous dance form of India is Bharatnatyam which originated in Tamil Nadu. It used to be a solo act which only women performed and expressed the beliefs of the South Indian traditions. Even though until the 19th century Bharatnatyam remained exclusive to the Hindu temples, it is now performed on stage with fusion themes.

Kathakali

Kathakali is one form of Indian classical dance of India which is performed with the purpose of “story-play.” The dance form gains its originality from the fact that colorful makeup is used to depict the characters in the play. While green is used for kings, divinities and heroes, black are used to indicate evil. The dance was mostly perfumed by male members who mainly carry out the story of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Mohiniyattam

The word ‘Mohiniyattam’ is derived from two different words ‘Mohini’ which means beautiful women and atta means dance. Hence, it is performed by women. The basic themes of this dance form are love and emotion.
